The Rutgers HCI and Security Engineering Lab promotes students from a variety of backgrounds and endorses a culture that stimulates collaboration and a sense of belonging to all of its members. Many of our lab members represent minority populations in ECE and we make an explicit effort to encourage these students and staff because our field still has a lot of progress to make. For example, only 10.7% of ECE employees are women and of those who earned an ECE degree in 2015, only 6.5% were Black, 11.8% Hispanic, and 2.8% multiracial. We acknowledge that diversity is critical to the success of our field. We hope that our lab culture and its commitment to increasing diversity can facilitate progress.
